Sail Boats at Hillarys Boat Harbour

Happy 2017 everyone! First post of the year and let’s just dive right into it.

All of us came into the world with no knowledge of how to run our lives. We don’t know why we are here and who we really are. Sometimes life feels like a hit and miss thing, and we can only get our hints from society and the people around us. We start to gather the idea of success which very much just borders around survival, fame and material acquisition.

It is said that nobody is really afraid of death, the real fear lies in an unfulfilled life.

I realized that the real question has always been this—is there a right or wrong way to live?

In a world of cause and effect, everything you do or did not do has a consequence affecting your immediate surroundings. The wave of that consequence might spread further and last longer depending on what you have done. It is like a drop of rain hitting a puddle versus a meteor hitting the ocean, the latter of which would result in a more serious and lasting effect. Since the effect largely depends on the input and the magnitude of that input, the change that your impact has on the world depends on who you are and how much influence you have. The thing is what goes around comes around, the larger the input, the bigger the returns.

It is neither good nor bad that things happen the way they happen. You throw a stone up in the air and it comes back down. You control the throwing, what happens after is just the laws of nature. The right or wrong way of living depends upon how you react to the outcome that you initiated in life. It can be done in a purposeful or an ignorant way. The differences between these two ways is the result of your growth and maturity.

“Everything happens kind of the way it’s supposed to happen, and we just watch it unfold. And you can’t control it. Looking back, you can’t say, ‘I should’ve… ‘ You didn’t, and had you, the outcome would have been different.”

Rick Rubin

Most people live akin to that of a buffalo, horizontally. They become trapped in the constraints of time. They live for the future and lingers in the past. Everything is measured according to a time frame. The mind creates this time phenomenon for without the mind, time doesn’t exist.

There is another way to live and that is vertically. Rather than living in the past and the future, one lives in the depth of the moment. It becomes about the intensity of the moment. The deeper the awareness of the moment, the more blissful life becomes. Time disappears because there is not a moment that is not now. Life becomes purposeful because every intention happens for the moment.

We are a vessel in this vast ocean call life. Like a sailing boat, we can chart our destination and set sail towards it. The truth is that all these sailors are taking a risk, hoping to reach their destination. We mitigate these risks through the advance of technology or the accumulation of knowledge in navigation, but one never knows what the ocean is going to do. One can only be ready and deal with situations that arises in each moment, and hope that one arrives.

It doesn’t matter what vessel one uses, ultimately it is just a small dot in the ocean.

There is only so much we can control. We can pilot the boat but everything else is beyond our control. Similarly, our body is our vessel. We can chart our trajectory in life and accumulate all the knowledge that is necessary to aid us towards our dreams. In fact, that is the only thing we can do. Destiny on the other hand is beyond dreams. Life has its own inner workings that is beyond our comprehension. Hopefully we can achieve our dreams while fulfilling our destiny, since destiny is indifferent to dreams. One never knows what their destiny is but it happens, and one can only lives intensely in the moment and enjoy the ride.

If you can enjoy the ride, your dreams would have been fulfilled because all your dreams are in each moment.

The adventure itself is the meaning of life.

There is neither a right or wrong way to live life, there is only the way…that is uniquely yours.

Chart your course and set sail my friends in the coming year.

I wish you all the best in everything that you do.
