Face of a Female Andean Cock of the Rock

 In Birds

Sharing a frame of one of my favorite birds, the Andean cock of the rock, also known as Tunki. It is the national bird of Peru and native to the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains. This is a female Andean cock of the rock with its darker and browner plumage. The male is more striking with its scarlet or bright orange plumage.

This Andean cock of the rock is perfect the way she is. If something is changed, she will not be the bird that she is. It is weird that humans always find flaws in ourselves, we are never perfect. All our struggles and striving is because we are never satisfied with the way we are. Something always needs changing. Sometimes we don’t even know what needs changing, so we look to others to see what they have that we don’t. Having what others have might make us feel a little more perfect. The thing is if you have totally what the other has, you become like him or her and you lose yourself in the process.

Perfection is an illusion. It is impossible to be a perfect human being. Getting a perfect body, having the optimum nutrition and diet, excel in your work and career, being spiritual, working on your etiquette, being a loving person and take responsibilities towards your family and friends…the list goes on and on. Taking away the perfect eight hours of sleep a day, you are not left with much to accomplish being the perfect human being. For a normal person, it is always a compromise. You are always sacrificing something to try to achieve something else. This achievement or desire might not even come from you, rather it might be imposed upon you.

The closest I find to being perfect is to live in the moment and make the right choice as each situation arises. This right choice is the tricky part, how does one know if it is right? The right choice is usually not what we think it is, rather the right choice happens most of the time when we are not thinking. It is the way we respond rather than react to a situation. It is done with awareness rather than thoughts.

Suppose you saw a person lying on the roadside drenched in blood at a shady place. If you are not thinking, you would be helping him or getting help. If you start thinking and accessing the situation, you will freeze. Is it worth the trouble? Do you want to get involved? After all, it is not your business. When you are thinking as that situation arises, that person might just lose his life.

An action that arises from the heart is always right. Nobody can predict what is going to happen. At that moment you know you are doing the right thing, not thinking of doing the right thing. Action from the mind has more potential to be wrong because you are trying to predict the future based on your past experiences. This future never appears because every moment is this moment. Every moment is fresh, it will never be like another moment in your past.
