“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

Lao Tzu

It is okay to let go, if not now, it will inevitably be at the end of life. When I say let go, I don’t mean physically dumping everything and go sleep on the streets. What I meant is emptying the mind and letting go of everything within. In the scheme of things, we are only borrowing everything for the time being. This includes everything from physical things to money, career and all the people you come across in your life; you are actually borrowing the time you have with them.

We don’t like to be reminded that life is truly brief, and we seek solace by imagining that there is this thing called security, so we live as if we can live forever. We spent time queuing for free stuff or hoping to grab a good deal. We get ourselves jammed in traffic. We expect others to change according to our expectations. We spent hours and hours on things and entertainment to pass time. We work hard to gather “stuff”, in exchange we give up our time because everyone seems to have lots of it.

The thing is, do we really know how much time we are left with?

The biggest time sink I realized after all these years is in thinking. I used to pride myself as a thinker but as I grow older, I found it to be a curse. There are an infinite amount of things that go through our minds each day and attending to each one of these thoughts will sent you into a bottomless spiral. Losing yourself in the dimension of thinking as life passes you by is the most stupid thing you can do for yourself. It is stupid because the world inside your head has got nothing to do with the reality that is happening on the outside.

There is a saying that you should fake it until you make it. You can think all day long about how ultra rich you can be, or that you can achieve any desires you might have. Truth is right now, this moment, there is a disconnect between what you think and reality. It will always be so because there is no correlation between the content in your head and the content of the world. In a way, you are taking all these actions in your mind but your body didn’t move an inch.

One popular word out there right now is “hustle” and it might just bring you closer to what you want instead of thinking, because doing something will always create a shift in your probability of becoming who you want to be. Excessive thinking on the other hand creates mental paralysis. You know how it feels like when you spiral into a state of anxiety and depression, and ended up doing nothing.

If thinking works for you, great. If not, what harm is there in trying to let go of your thoughts, especially when it is the only way left to keep you moving. When you stop thinking of who you are and you let go of all your accumulated preferences, the nature of your true self might just emerge and you may well find yourself stumbling into the life of your dreams.
